Bizarre?!

I think we might need a sociologist to break this bizarre news story down. Here’s my attempt (which includes a touch of inference):

1. Karren Matthews (32) has a 9 year old daughter (Shannon.)
2. Karren’s husband (Shannon’s stepfather) is Craig Meehan (22).
3. Karren, Shannon and Meechan have been living together for 5 years.
4. Shannon goes missing in February!
5. The Police manage to locate and apprehend Shannon and her kidnapper, 3 weeks after she went missing.
6. Her kidnapper turns out to be Meechan’s uncle, Michael Donovan (39).(!)
7. Today’s news – Meechan is arrested by the Police for 10 counts of possessing indecent images of children.

I think the above is a reasonable rundown of the facts – I don’t know where one would start trying to analyse all this.

From my humble legal viewpoint, I find it quite startling that the Police took the action they did against Meechan. Normally the authorities operate against the issue of child porn on the level of website owners and online distributors.

My suspicion is that the police might have arrested Craig in order to interrogate him about a deeper issue concerning the unusual goings on in the wider case – perhaps to uncover his involvement in Shannon’s kidnapping!?

[UPDATE: Not directly relevant to the news story but some more on theme of how unusal the background this case is; the Daily Telegraph reports that Karren Matthews "has seven children to five fathers". If this is not unusual then I must be more out of touch with some aspects of society than I presumed.]
